Note on the text...
Important: for assignments READ THE UNIX TEXTBOOK! The book is
EXTREMELY useful for all assignments you will have in this class and
is very well written. For assignment 1, you will want to read chapters
1-3, anddo the examples to become familiar with the Unix system and
it's programming quirks. If you have any trouble with the text or
examples, please stop by during office hours, or email me.

On learning Unix and C...
You should be able to get all of the information you need to do the
assignments from the Unix textbook and Unix Man pages (even if you
don't know C well, the examples in the book should help teach you that
as well). If you cannot find your answer in these two resources,
there are other options.
For Unix and C programming information, both of the other recitation
pages (1, 2) have a collection of links, organized last year by Andy Reitz.
Feel free to use them, but if it's C programming references that you
need, I recommend buying a textbook, as I find printed books are much
easier to deal with while working at a computer. As for Unix, you
should also invest in a book, it will be useful. I suggest one of the
Unix books published by O'Reilly,
they are the best written and easiest to use. If you already know
something about Unix, and just need a quick reference, I suggest the Unix in
a Nutshell book, it's extremely useful.
